Battle Bluff Loop

The Battle Bluff Loop is located on the north side of Kamloops Lake, and offers stunning views for those who hike it. The trail ends upon the top of a basalt bluff (Battle Bluff) overlooking Kamloops Lake and the valley to the west. The trail is a fairly modest one, boasting minimal elevation gain until the ascent up the bluff. Situated inside the Lac Du Bois Grasslands, expect to see large amount of sagebrush, crabgrass and other small shrubs along the route. Minimal tree cover makes this hike somewhat exposed so be sure to pack extra water and dress for the conditions. We did not have a problem with ticks when we went but they are no doubt lurking in the grass so make sure to check yourself before leaving.

This trail starts 1.4km along Frederick Rd. Access is gained by driving up Tranquille-Criss Creek Rd for 4km until you reach a turn off for Frederick Rd. Tranquille-Criss Creek Rd is simply the extension of Tranquille Rd above the train tracks. Parking for the trail is very open and can accompany multiple vehicles.

From the Trailhead, follow the double track into the hills. The trail is very well defined thus making it hard to get lost. Continue through the trees, being mindful of wildlife that may present itself. Late spring brings out the rattlesnakes in the area so if you choose this hike in July, stay extra cautious.  As you make your way out and into the grasslands you will come across a small lookout. This is the first of two lookouts along the trail and makes an excellent photo opportunity. Continue right of the lookout and follow the trail to the old abandoned car. At this point you can choose which direction to go. Both will take you to the same place in the end so it is completely your decision. We chose to take the right fork which takes you down along the old telegraph lines that ran to Frederick in years past.

Eventually, the trail will make its way to the base of the bluff overlooking the lake. This may look like a daunting climb for some but don’t worry; switchbacks have been make into the hill to ease the otherwise strenuous hike. The ground will quickly change from soil to rock so watch your step. Many animals make this area their home so do your best not to disturb their habitat. Sheep frequent the cliff sides so be on the lookout for them as you make your way to the peak.

The top of the bluff offers a soothing breeze and an even more settling view of the surrounding area. Don’t get too comfortable though. Swallows seem to nest along the cliff sides and do not take kindly to intruders. Although they won’t hit you, they have a habit of flying ever so close to you, enough to brush up along your back if you aren’t looking.

As you make your way down, take your time descending the bluff as many of the rocks are not stable enough to bear weight. If you chose to take the side route as we did, continue north as you come off the bluff instead of heading back to the west. Continue back through the trees until you reach your car.
